This Week Was Really Amazing.

Hey Everyone!

This week was really amazing. I don't know why, but each week gets more and more hectic. Maybe eventually I'll get a break. But who really knows?

Monday we spent the afternoon of our P-Day a bit more enjoyably. We decided that we needed to get out of the house, and out into nature... Or at least where the sun's shining. So in our lack of creativity, the sisters thought it'd be a great idea to go have a picnic. And because we couldn't come up with anything better, we said sure. It was really enjoyable and lots of fun. We bought a bunch of fruit, Elder Mitchell and I each got a Coca-Cola, and we went out to a park down by the river. We had our little picnic, tossed around a football (not a

soccer ball), and just had a good time. I even rolled up my pant legs a little bit to catch a little sun. Too bad it didn't do anything though. Still pasty white haha. That's alright, I'll live.

We had a little conference here in Drammen this week too. So that kept us pretty busy getting everything in line for that. But that went real well. It went smoothly so I can't complain any.

Right after the conference we, yes, got on a train, along with the missionaries in Arendal and Kristiansand because we were having splits with the Kristiansand elders. It was SUCH A LONG train ride. 4 hours. That's a long time to sit in one spot. I had to stand up and walk

around a couple times. But the train ride was real good.

Splits in Kristiansand was way nice. One, the city is like one of the most southern cities in Norway, so it's a lot warmer and it's just way cool. It's just a gorgeous place. Plus, I was with Elder Tangen who was in my MTC group, plus we served together in Sandvika, so it was a

blast. And a blast to the past. haha Just a lot of good reminiscing.

After splits, we took the beautiful, yet very rainy train ride the WHOLE 4 HOURS BACK! This time it wasn't so hard. Elder Mitchell and I each bought an 8-pack of boller, and a coke to make the trip. We ended having a way cool conversation with this lady on the train though. Fun story, her great great great something grandma was one of the last

witches burned in Norway. So, I met a descendant of a witch XD haha It was a pretty crazy story. I guess those witch trials weren't JUST in the US.

LUTEFISK! Yes, so anyone still reading this finally hit the reason they wanted to read it. Yes, I finally had lutefisk. It was like one of the last foods on my Norwegian food bucket list! Now, for everyone who are turned away from the thought of lutefisk, or fish jello, or whatever you want to call it. It was DELICIOUS. Like, it was . Our landlords had made it, and wow. Good. I really liked it. I had it with some pea stew and potatoes on the side, with some bacon and grilled onions on the top. Boy was that good. If you get the chance, eat it.

This last weekend was General Conference. What a great opportunity to hear so many good talks. I loved it. It was hard to sit still for so long, but I managed! haha We're watching the last session tonight with a member here in Drammen so that'll be way fun. But I highly suggest watching it if you haven't!

Talk About A Crazy Week!

Hello everyone!

Talk about a crazy week! First off, I finally got to see the midnight sun, and it was EPIC! Needless to say, we finally got a night which was clear enough and not entirely clouded over. That was definitely an experience of a lifetime. It's something I'd wish everyone could experience sometime in their lives! I do have to say though, pictures don't even come close to how cool it was.

It did feel like a bit of a slow week for the first bit. Because it's summer, many people are on vacation, and that doesn't mean just relaxing at home. When people go on vacation, they're gone for weeks at a time (great if you're not a missionary). Mostly it just makes it a bit more difficult to meet with people. But lucky for us, most people seem to be finishing up vacation here soon, so that's exciting!

The Elders in Mo i Rana came up to Bodø for splits this last week. It was really awesome having them over, especially because I know both of them really well. It was Elder Tangen (who I was companions with a few months ago) and Elder McIntire (who was in Fredrikstad serving at the same time I was there). It was great to catch up with them, see how they were doing, and get to spend some time doing missionary work with them. It was a blast having them come up and visit.

Yesterday was a pretty great day. We had church, both Elder Stephens and I gave talks for it, and it started out with just 5 of us there in total. While I started speaking, we had some visitors come and it was awesome because all of a sudden the number of us in church doubled! haha Normally there's more in church, but many were out of town of vacation this week. Next week it should be back to normal.

After church we went and visited an older lady in the city. She lives in a care center and is just the nicest lady ever. But we had gone there and sometimes we play the piano for her (that's what we ended up doing yesterday) and as I started to play, one of the nurses asked if we minded if they brought out some of the other people there too to listen. We naturally said yes, and it was a really fun experience playing for a bunch of people there. It was nice just seeing them happy and enjoying it.

There was a scripture which I read yesterday that I like very much. It is the last verse of Ether 12, and it says:

"41 And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever. Amen."

I really like his invitation for all of us, to not just think of Christ, or to just hope He is there, but to SEEK Jesus. I think that is something really important, that we not only just believe in Christ, but continually seek him out. That we continually try to come closer to Him.

I feel like that word "seek" means that we are engaged in finding. That it is more than just wandering around and maybe stumble across it, but that it becomes our goal, our desire, and our focus. I think that is something that we all need. We all need to continue seeking Christ. That once we've found Christ, that we continue drawing closer to Him and having a better relationship with Him. I think it's important for all of us to try to understand Christ better, that He becomes a more active part of our faith.

I Have A New Companion, Elder Rial

Hello Everyone!

Well this week has been jampacked with a lot of different things. To begin, I hit my 11 month mark this last week. That was SOOOOO weird. Norway is home to me. I can't imagine being anywhere else. I feel like I've always been in Norway, but at the same time, I feel as if I just got here. I was having this discussion with another missionary about reaching the halfway point in a mission. At around the halfway point, you feel as though you finally know what you're doing. You can speak the language without too much of a problem. You feel as though you just finally figured it out. Then you realize that you don't know anything. You realize that there is so much more you need to learn and do and become. It's a very strange point, but it's quite humbling. It's a point where you can look back and see all of the progress you've made. I see how I'm a changed person. I'm a better person now than before I board the plan to leave home. I can look forward and see my potential for growth in the year to come. It's really cool to me. Weird, but great regardless.

Elder Tangen left for a city called Mo i Rana this week. So I dropped him off at the train station and waited with some missionaries in Oslo to get my new companion! Needless to say, I picked up Elder Rial (my new companion) from the train station and brought him back. Elder Rial was just barely in Mo i Rana, so him and Elder Tangen switched. That was a pretty ironic haha! Elder Rial actually started his mission here in Sandvika, so he'll most likely be finishing it here too. If I'm lucky I'll end up as Elder Rial's last companion! haha

This week we spent a lot of time visiting different members. I just am amazed more and more how awesome they are. Everyone here is just so kind and helpful and just incredible people. I don't think that there really is any other way to describe it. I just know that I can't do it justice in attempting to explain it.

In church yesterday we talked about the parable of the sower. Because it's so long I won't send it in an email, but I encourage all of you to read it.  There were a few things that really impacted me. I do believe though that the biggest thing that I took away from it was the impact that the sower had on the harvest. The sower went everywhere, sowing seeds (hence his job description). But along the way, seeds feel wherever he went, regardless of whether he intended it or not. Ideally he would cast seeds on good soil, places where the seeds would have a chance to grow, but that isn't always the case. Seeds fell wherever he went. I believe that is the same for us. We have an effect wherever we go. Our "seeds" in life is the impact we have on others by our example. We leave an impression wherever we go. All of us are sowers in life. We just try to sow the best seeds we can. Hopefully it's a good example we leave for others. There comes at times when those seeds of our examples fall in good "soil". They leave an impression for others and it changes their lives. Everything we do has potential to influence others' lives for the good or the bad. It's up to us to do our best to make it for the better.

Such Is Life On A Mission; You Never Know Who Will Stay

Hello everyone!

Such is life on a mission. You never know who will stay, who will leave, or in what combination. Missions have a way of mixing things up... for 2 years... with no breaks haha. As we were listening to the moves call, finding out who was going where, assuming that Elder Tangen and I were staying together her in Sandvika for another transfer, we find out a big surprise! Elder Tangen is moving up to Mo i Rana, and I'll be staying here in Sandvika for another while! It's really sad to have Elder Tangen move, especially considering we've only been serving together for 6 weeks, but he's needed elsewhere. I will be getting Elder Rial, who was Elder Tangen's trainer, this week. So that's really exciting. I'm excited to get to know him and keep serving here in such an awesome ward! Elder Rial actually started his mission here so that's really cool to be here for when he comes back!

So this week we have been trying to start an initiative to meet with as many members as we can. It's been really fun to start visiting as many as we can. This ward is really cool. It's fun to keep getting to know them better!

I thought I would share something that we do every week which most of you don't know. So every week, a bunch of us from the ward get together and play soccer. It's so fun. I've been getting good over the last 3 months. And by getting good, I mean that I don't suck terribly! haha I guess that's what happens when you don't play soccer much in the US. I've now got at least another 6 weeks to get mad soccer skills!

This scripture is one that I really like. It comes from Alma 17:2-3.

I really liked these scriptures. I really liked how their bond as friends, as brethren in the Lord, had grown strong because of their service. Because they had served the Lord faithfully, and continued to trying to help others come to an understanding of Christ, and a knowledge of God's plan of happiness, they were strengthened. They grew because of their desire to bless others and their dedication to the work which they did.

Hello everyone!

Talk about patriotism! Yesterday was Syttende Mai, Norway's National Day. Everyone all over the country floods the streets to celebrate Norway and all of the freedoms that are enjoyed here.

Elder Tangen and I got to drive into Oslo, the capital city to celebrate. We were out by the King's Palace and saw the streets get FILLED. Everyone was packed just about shoulder to shoulder and it was incredible. We watched the parades go by and we got to see King Harald V waving to everyone. It was so exciting seeing everyone out and about and having a great time.

A couple of very traditional things to do on the 17th of May is to eat hot dogs and ice cream. And boy was there a lot of that! We had so much fun going around and seeing all of the sights and being around everyone. Everyone is so happy with each other and celebrating. I can't say that I've ever seen so much national pride in my life! It was just so awesome.

After being in Oslo, a bunch of the missionaries, including us, went back to our mission president's home and had a barbecue (yes, there were hot dogs haha). We got to relax all day, sit and visit, and play some games. It definitely has been a highlight of my mission so far!

Happy Mother's Day!

Dear Family & Friends,

I believe that when you put Zone Conference and Mother's Day in the same week, you're bound to have plenty to write home about. As you all can tell, this has been quite an eventful week!

We drove to Oslo for Zone Conference this last week. We had a great conference. There were a couple points that I took away from the conference.

1. Studying effectively allows us to better prepare for the day.

2. Reading the Book of Mormon each day will bring spiritual strength.

I believe that these points can make a difference in everyone's lives, not just for those that are missionaries. No matter what we do in life, we should always be striving to grow. That means that throughout our lives, we ought to be continually learning. By taking some time every day to study (study of the scriptures, school, learning more about your career field) it allows us to grow. It allows us to be greater that day than the day before because we are better prepared to take on the world, and better prepared to move forward in life.

Daily study and personal application of the Book of Mormon will bring us closer to Christ than by any other means. Many times I think we take for granted the necessity of the Book of Mormon in our lives. Daily study allows us to greater understand Christ's teachings and doctrine. It allows us to daily continue to build upon our faith and testimony of Christ. By doing so, we will find ourselves closer to Him and have a greater understanding of what He really means for each of us personally.

Yesterday was Mother's Day! It meant that I got to Skype home to my family! It was so wonderful to talk with them and see how everything was going. It was so amazing to see them all and talk about life. I'm sure every Mother with a missionary out serving loved yesterday because they got to talk with their son or daughter and see their smiling faces!

While I was thinking yesterday, I remembered a couple talks that have been given by different general authorities of the church. A couple have been titled, "Behold, thy Mother". If you haven't heard them or haven't listened to them in a while, do it! They are wonderful talks about mothers and the great impact that they make in our lives.

This Week Has Been Really Awesome!

Hello!

This week has been really awesome! We have come across some really wonderful people this week! We have been able to talk with several people this last week while knocking on doors. Along with some amazing people, comes some incredible stories.

We were going down the street and we hear this voice from across the street yelling towards us. She yells (because we wouldn't be able to hear her if she was just talking normally) asking if we wanted to come over for a visit. She invited us over, and said that she saw us walking and wanted to hear what our message was. In Norway, it's not too often that you have someone call you over from across the street to come visit them. It was definitely a blessing that we had. Because she had invited us over, we were able to share with her the message of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It was a wonderful lesson and conversation we had.

Another experience that we had occured yesterday. We were going around trying to find people, and there was a lady that told us that we ought to visit a certain neighbor of hers. We were told that there was an older couple that had lived over there and might be interested. So naturally, we went over to see if they would be interested. An older lady answered the door and said she wasn't too interested. She asked if we were Mormons and we said yes. She proceeded to talk to us how a number of years ago her and her husband had been taught by the missionaries. Then we kept talking about her experience with that. As the conversation continued, you could see her eyes begin to tear a bit. She mentioned how when she was younger she had visited Temple Square and heard the tabernacle choir and saw the temple. We talked about why we have temples and how wonderful of a blessing it is in our lives. With the whole conversation, a peace had come, and she was reflecting on fond memories from this earlier time in her life. It was a blessing to see and hear her experiences that she had had. She told us that we would be able to come back later, so it was a really wonderful blessing to find her.

Through this week I've been able to see the hand of the Lord more and more in my life and in the lives of others. There are blessings that all of us have that we don't recognize. Many times when God helps us, even in the smallest ways, sometimes we forget why we have them. Our Heavenly Father loves us and wants to bless us. The more good we do, the more we do to live a Christ-like life, the more that God can bless us. If we keep turning to Him, we will be able to see His guidance, direction, and love for us.

Stake Conference In Romerike

April 25, 2016

Hello Everyone,

We had a full week of talking with people and the normal missionary work, BUUUUUUT, on top of it all, we had stake conference! That topped off a really great week!

We did have the normal talking to people on the street and knocking on doors this week, and that went well. We did however meet a really awesome guy on the street though! We talked about finding out if God exists and we talked about life after death. We had an awesome conversation. We gave him a Book of Mormon too, which he seemed excited to learn about and read. He'll be on vacation for a few weeks, but we will meet with him afterwards. It was really great!

As a side note, it's been snowing off and on these last few days... while at the same time being really warm. I don't think that the weather can make up its mind when it comes to springtime in Norway!

Like I said earlier, we also had stake conference this weekend. So all of the churches in Eastern Norway (plus Trondheim), our entire stake, had a meeting in Romerike. It was a really great opportunity to see everyone I knew from Fredrikstad again, and also a great opportunity to learn. It was wonderful to see basically the entire Fredrikstad ward. A lot happens in two months of being gone! It was great to catch up with everyone and say hello.

Oh! As of two days ago I did reach my 10 months mark. So almost at the halfway point! It's crazy!

We Had Such An Action Packed Week!

April 18, 2016

Hello everyone!

We had such an action packed week! Transfers occurred this week, which includes a lot of goodbyes and packing and preparation and whatnot, basically it is a lot going on. Elder Kemp moved to Oslo, so that was sad to see him go, but he's only a half an hour away, and I'll be seeing him on Sunday because of Stake Conference! Elder Tangen came and is my new companion. He's from Meridian, Idaho. He just has been in Hamar and now he's moved here to Sandvika! Elder Tangen is a really awesome guy. We were in the MTC at the same time before we came to Norway. He's quite the Lord of the Rings fan (I've seen all of them so I totally understand why he loves it so much). He's also really smart. He's a science guy so we get along great!

There were a lot of people we visited this week. In combination of Elder Kemp saying bye to everyone and Elder Tangen meeting many of the members in the ward, I've seen a lot of people in quite the short amount of time!

We were able to talk with quite a few people this week while proselyting. Many people were home and open to talking. It was a great experience to talk with them and share our beliefs with them. There are so many wonderful people in this country, it's quite amazing to get to know them and to learn more about them.

While we were out this week we randomly came across this place called Tanum Kirke. It's just a small local church that is a few hundred years old. Anyways, while we were walking up to it, I realized what it was. I knew about this church because I had studied a little bit of my family history, and it happened to be the same church that one of my ancestors had been christened in when he was a baby! It was just so cool to be at the same place as where my ancestors have walked. It was quite an experience to have.

On Saturday, there had been a couple baptisms in the ward. The other Elders had been teaching two incredible guys, who happen to be brothers, and they were baptized on Saturday. It was so amazing to watch their baptism and have seen their progress in the last couple months. They are such awesome guys, and it just was so wonderful to watch them follow the example of Christ.

Yesterday in church we had talked about how we can share the gospel more in our lives. A common theme that came was how important our example to others is. As members of Christ's church we are to always have His name written on our hearts. I believe that means more than just remembering Christ. I believe it means trying our best to be more like Christ, striving to act as He would act, say and do what He would say and do. So when it comes to sharing the Gospel, a huge aspect is just trying to follow Christ. Others notice what we say and do, and many notice how we are different than a lot of others. We are unique, and because people are curious, they want to know what makes us different. We won't have opportunities to share the gospel every moment of every day, but we share a message without words by our examples.
